Elizabeth Bay wins Excellence in Brick and Block Awards

Elizabeth Bay has taken out the Excellence in Brick and Block Award for Single Dwelling-Brickwork. This is an industry award that celebrates the craft and art of bricklaying. Given that this house is essentially a house made from bricks the set-out and detailing of the brickwork was critical.

The bricks sourced form Bowral Bricks in NSW were a 50mm brick and Gertrudis Brown colour. They were mixed in Bowral to avoid the concentration of colour in particular areas, and mixed again on site prior to laying. A small team of Bricklayers MJM Brick and Block Laying led by Matthew Misek was responsible for the success of the project in many ways.

Because the bricks are exposed inside and out the building set out and all services, fixtures and fittings had to be accommodated and coordinated with the brickwork dimensions. There are no cut bricks visible in the entire building.  All the windows sit flush with the walls and the fireplaces are a real feature. The outdoor fire place feature a traditional brick chimney. This level of craft is unusual today so it was a pleasure to be involved in the awarding of this honour.
