We have been involved for the past months with the design of alterations and additions to the House of Dr Karl Kruszelnicki his wife Mary Dobbie and their children and extended family. Situated in the beach side suburb of Maroubra the project involves rationalizing what is currently an adhoc but interesting array of workshops, living spaces and outdoor verandahs and courtyards into a cohesive whole. Dr Karl’s views on the future are well known so energy efficiency and self sufficiency are a central. Incorporating photovoltaic and water collection technologies, the alterations and additons also aim do more conventional architectural things like making sense of the orientation and nature of the site.. Mary would like a good laundry and daughter Alice would love somewhere to store her beloved Bicycle. But we are also delivering better connections to the garden and the views over the coastline where Karl watches over the movements of weather, aquatic mammals and the heavenly bodies. New covered outdoor areas complement an array of small but well thought through interventions. It is by no means a straightforward commission but an interesting one for creative and interesting people.
We are currently nearing completion of the development application drawings and hope to have works commencing early in 2012.
