The office has recently received approval to proceed with the construction of our most recently documented house in Kings Road Vaucluse. The house is situated on the upper slopes of Sydney’s South Head very close to Francis Greenway’s original 1818 Lighthouse, the first lighthouse to be built in Australia.
The house is situated on a corner block with a north-westerly aspect and iconic views towards the Harbour, the city skyline, the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. While making the most of these unique and wonderful views the house also seeks to create a tranquil inner and private realm with sheltered gardens, ponds, a pool and shaded terraces.
With its wide and protective eaves, a simple materials palette, of timber, masonry, stone and steel, the house attempts to tie the spaces horizontally into the broader context, while using the freedom of the corner site and its change in level to hide the car-parking and servant spaces in a basement podium. A lowered rear pool court and surrounding gardens create a focus for private activities and provides protection from the sometimes harsher aspects of this site, exposed as it is to strong winds from all directions, the proximity of the cliffs and ocean to the east, and harsh northern and western sun penetration. This is a house fitted meticulously to its context and we feel sure that it will be an embellishment to this historic and wonderful natural setting.
The Clients have a wonderful and eclectic collection of Australian, Asian and European art, furniture and fittings which are being carefully integrated into the interior details of the house with great emphasis on an informal but sophisticated lifestyle.
The house will be built by Horizon Habitats who have a growing reputation for the delivery of high quality homes, having recently won the MBA best home of the year over 3 million. Construction will begin in earnest in the January 2011 as we make the final preparations for necessary approvals and other statutory requirements that must be in place prior to construction.
