Maroubra Studio

The brief for this project was to create a private, secluded garden studio and study space, that would act as a small escape from the lively, albeit sometimes distracting, hustle and bustle of family life.

The small studio was designed by DKC to create a study space for work, but also to accomodate visitors who were coming to stay. A key concern in the brief was thus to create a sense of privacy and comfort. It was very carefully and thoughtfully designed to fulfil this brief.

By day this studio works as a generous study, by night, the double bed hidden behind joinery transforms this space into a comfortable studio apartment. Provisioned with a simple kitchenette and bathroom it can be used independently of the main house, and works as a self-contained unit.

Located within a generous garden, the studio sits hidden and obscured by the rich foliage. Embedded within the undulated forms of the site, the project involved extensive and considered structural planning, including a retaining wall. Using the existing advantages of a particular site is paramount to our design philosophy, and worked successfully in enhancing the privacy of this small retreat.

With beautiful craftsmanship provided by Horizon, this secluded garden studio is considered to be very successful in both its functionality and its beauty.
